Is MoviePass really Dead? If so what do we do now? Is A-List the answer to our movie subscription problems?
For all movie fans and enthusiast alike...
While we have all enjoyed the last year of unlimited access (for the most part) to the almost lost experience of the movie theater. The too good to be true opportunity that was MoviePass is upon its final curtain.
“ MoviePass has become a sinking vessel and it’s time to abandon ship! ”
Now don’t get me wrong, I was a huge advocate for this program in its original form. I told everyone I could about it because of what an amazing deal it was. Especially for someone such as myself who spends way too much time at the movies. But over the last few months even before the rollout of similar products; this company has been making all the wrong moves.
First, they implement a rule preventing you from viewing the same movie more than once. Which was fine for the most part being that there were still plenty of films to be seen most months. Then they decide that if you go to see films at “prime viewing hours” there will be a surcharge of $2-6 fee due at time of booking. Which obviously defeats the purpose of having the pass.
Finally, we are now hearing about new releases/blockbusters being blacked out during their opening weekend. Not to mention the bailouts that have happened, as well as the forced/false promotion of films they have personal finances in like Gotti. It appears MoviePass is doing everything in its power to drive its business into the ground while losing the trust of its patrons.
" However, there is a silver lining at the edge of this dark cloud, and for me it is AMC A-List. "
This service is the logical next step in the “movie pass” style business model. But much more streamlined and user friendly. You sign up online through the AMC app or website; and as soon as you’re done, you’re in. No waiting for a debit card through the mail. Everything you need from picking your movie, reserving your seat, even using your ticket at the theater is all app enabled. No waiting in line at the ticket counter, just scan your phone and go. And if there is ever a problem the theater itself can help you with troubleshooting rather than making you call some help line.
One of the greatest parts about this service is that you have the ability to watch any film in any format. So, whether that be standard, IMAX, 3D, Dine In, or Dolby Cinema; it’s all available to you. You can see up to 3 movies a week at any AMC. You can even see all 3 films in one day if you so choose. The best part is, you can buy your tickets in advance rather than day of, as long as it’s within the week timeframe. Your service resets every Friday and then you are back at 3 showings. Plus, no restrictions on multiple viewings of the same movie.
There are even more perks that go along with this subscription.
You’re automatically signed up for an AMC Stubs Premiere account (usually $15 for a year subscription). AMC’s reward program which helps you collect points with every purchase (outside of the app). You also get an extra 2000 points per month just for paying for your subscription cost. This helps you save up quickly for discounts and more on food or other products.
The monthly charge for all of this is just $20. Which while being more than the cost of MoviePass service; all of the benefits of AMC A-List far outweigh the difference in price. I will tell you that I am less than a week and only 1 movie into my new subscription. But I am already happier with A-List than I ever was with MoviePass. I seriously can’t say enough about how much I love this service.
Obviously, the main down side to this is that it is only available for use at AMC theaters. I know that not everyone has the luxury of having an AMC in their town. So, I recommend keeping an eye out for other companies like Regal and Cinemark to follow suit soon. Have any more questions? Feel free to comment below or follow the link and see for yourself.
