The Mummy (2017)

This movie is pretty much what I had hoped it would be from the trailers. And nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be after seeing the initial reviews for the film online. Including of course the current Rotten Tomatoes critic score (14%) ...Yikes!

But don't let that number deter your interest in seeing this film. It is a fun, action packed ride with some good old fashioned scares thrown in just to keep things interesting. Sometimes a little campy, this movie blends in some of the classic feel of the early 2000's version along the way. While not every joke lands, if you go in with the right state of mind you'll get a kick out of the humor.

Tom Cruise does a great job of drawing you in from start to finish. You can really tell that he was in it all the way. And I would expect nothing less honestly. Sofia Boutella (Ahmanet) did a great job bringing out the physicality of the monster. Something I feel was lacking from most of the earlier movies. You also connect with her throughout the story even with minimal dialogue.

All in all I would say that while yes this is not a perfect movie. Probably not even the best film you'll see this month. I still suggest checking it out on the big screen. My hope is that regardless of what happens critically and financially they still try and move forward with this new "Dark Universe" of monsters. Only time will tell.
