I’m being completely honest when I say that I had more than a few reservations going into this screening. I wasn’t super enthusiastic after watching the trailers, not to mention the initial buzz wasn’t great. However like most movies I review I do my best to clear my mind and go in with reasonable expectations regardless of the noise.
First and foremost I will say this, it was better than I thought it would be. The first 30 minutes was or so a bit slow to start. But once our “two leads” finally came together that’s when the film really caught its footing.
“ Honestly the best part about this movie was the relationship between Eddie and Venom. ”
Their constant back and forth plus their physical dynamics brought a lot of humor and much needed fun to the overall landscape. The action at times was reminiscent of some early 2000’s era action and comic book movies. But I’ll give it a pass on that because it was still enjoyable for the most part.
Where the film suffered the most throughout in my opinion was the villain.
“How many times are we going to have a troubled megalomaniac as our main antagonist? And how many times are we going to do it wrong? ”
Even though this character and his subsequent company is tagged as the reason Venom is here. This particular story line did nothing for me and could’ve sank a lesser performance by a different actor in the leading role. I’m sure they were just softball-ing us this time around to keep the focus on Venom. And from the looks of things they do have plans to go bigger next time around. That’s all I can really say without going into to spoiler territory.
With that being said the one thing I will say is be sure to stick around after the movie. There is a Venom tied in mid-credit scene as well as a post credit scene for something a bit more fun.
All in all I would say I had fun with this movie and will most likely see it again. I’m glad I took the time to go out and make my own opinions on the film and hope others will do the same. This may be quite a bit different than what we are used to with comic book movies now a days. But I can honestly say that I’m interested to see what comes next from this new regime at Sony. Only time will tell if they get the chance or deserve that chance to go forward.
